About me

A native English speaker, I have spent the last 20 years in education, primarily in Teaching English as a Foreign language, but in the last five years I have concentrated more on English Language and Literature for GCSE.

As a private tutor I have found I have been remarkably successful in helping students increase their grades very quickly, eventually leading to a good GCSE result. I have worked with high level students who are now studying at Cambridge and borderline students who just needed to pass and have done so.

To date, I have not had a failure. Most of my students over the last five years have been boys (with some girls) who have a strong science bias and struggle with the creative side of English language, and this has now become my specialty. A second group are those whose first language is not English but have developed a good level of spoken English. They often do not acquire the sophisticated vocabulary needed at GCSE and above because of a limited exposure to literature. I have techniques that can help improve the range of vocabulary used in the exams. Limited availability at the moment - from the beginning of November 2020 there will be more spaces available.
